Curb appeal on a midcentury ranch usually comes down to three things: the brick, the entry, and the roofline shadow. Painting the brick white resets the elevation, vertical cedar at the entry gives it a focal point with warmth, and a wide wood door at the correct scale finishes it.

The Challenge

Ranch elevations are long and low, and the front door often disappears into the run. The entry needed to be findable from the street without adding something that fights the horizontal lines of the house.

The Approach

Cedar cladding is confined to the entry bay only, which reads as a deliberate inset rather than applied decoration. Painting the brick unifies the elevation so the cedar and door carry all the contrast. Inside, the living area was opened and refinished to match the reset the exterior got.
